Different stages of mind

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. It does not sleep. You are fully aware when you are hypnotized. To understand what hypnosis is, it is important first to consider the inner workings of the human mind. The mind is made up of four different levels of activity.

·         The first level of the stage is called beta. This is the level of complete consciousness. We function in this level approximately 16 hours each day. The main purpose of this level is to regulate life-controlling bodily functions such as heartbeat, breathing, kidney function, digestion, etc.

·         The second level is what we call alpha. Alpha corresponds to the subconscious mind, and this is what we deal with in hypnosis. This level is characterized by 95 to 100 percent concentration efficiency. This is far superior to the 25 percent efficiency of the conscious or beta level. Examples of activity on the alpha level are hypnosis, meditation, daydreaming, biofeedback, and awakening.

·         The next level of mental activity is called theta. This is the part of the unconscious mind that functions in the light speed. The term conscious means awake, unconscious means unawake and unaware.

·         The last level is called a delta. This corresponds to deep sleep. At this level, the unconscious mind is finding the greatest amount of rest. This level takes approximately thirty to forty minutes each night.

The Levels of hypnosis

What about the different levels or stages of hypnosis? Today scientist categorizes more than 50 different levels of hypnosis, but for simplicity, I will divide hypnosis into three levels.

·         Light trance: in this level, the patient is relaxed and probably won’t feel that he or she hypnotized. Although regressions and progressions can be accomplished at this level, the information found is very unclear. In adding, when I work with fears, habits, depression etc.

·         Medium trance: this is the level in which I prefer to work. In this level, the patient is more completely relaxed and more able to accept very difficult training suggestions. At this level, the patient may be aware of outside noises but they will not distract him. About 70% of the public can achieve this level.

·         Somnambulistic trance: this is the level of hypnosis a stage hypnotist likes to use because of one characteristic of it is “hypnoamnesia”. In other words, the patient will not remember what he or she did or said in trance unless exactly told to remember upon awakening. Only about 5% of the public can achieve this level. Even in this very deep level, the patient can’t be told to do or say anything that is against his or her ethical code.

Who can be hypnotized

The best hypnotic patients are intelligent people, who have an excellent memory, can focus their concentration, visualize scenes with great detail, can express emotions easily, are not overly critical, and who can go to a lecture or movie and become so deeply involved in the strategy that time passes very quickly. Children make excellent patients cause of their imaginations, respect for authority, and lack of conflict. The best hypnotic patients are children between the ages of eight and sixteen.
